Tips for a Vegetarian Version:

  • To make this beef lasagne recipe vegetarian, simply substitute the ground beef with your favorite plant-based ground meat alternative, such as plant-based crumbles or lentils.
  • You can also add in some diced vegetables, such as bell peppers, mushrooms, or zucchini, to the sauce for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Use a plant-based ricotta cheese or tofu ricotta instead of dairy-based ricotta cheese.
  • Adjust the seasonings and cooking time as needed, depending on the substitutions made.

Serving: 6-8

Cooking time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Cost: $11-15

For the Filling:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add in the chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until the onion is softened.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.
  5. To assemble the lasagne, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange a layer of cooked lasagne noodles on top, followed by a layer of meat sauce, ricotta cheese mixture, and shredded mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used up, finishing with a layer of meat sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Let the beef lasagne rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired.
